I am a teacher of English and ESL (English as a Second Language). It has been my chosen profession, and my pleasure, since I started teaching, which began in the 1980's. My experiences in the classroom showed me the need for a more thorough treatment of idioms than I was seeing in idiom books or textbooks. The result was a creation of an idiom database (approx. 25,000), a compendium of phrases that I collect -- collate --parse -- rank order -- define -- cross-reference -- synonymize (list synonyms for) -- and illustrate. They are being refined for use in textbooks, reference books, and educational materials for students and writers of English. A sample of that work can be found among my list of favorites -- an animal idioms webquest that I produced (with the help of two collaboraters) -- for students of English as a Second Language (you can see some of them directly in "Bolstar Animal Idioms" page).
